Inspired by Search Engine Watch: Breaking the Single Keyword Obsession in SEO Campaigns

So you've been studying up on SEO and why your business website needs to be friendly to search engines. You've even convinced your boss to set aside budget for a search marketing strategies program. You did the research on your industry and came back with the top two keywords your competitors are targeting - your boss is demanding that your company's website win those keywords.

Your boss is wrong.

Okay, not completely wrong. But is your boss an SEO expert? Okay then.

It's tempting to go after the big fish when developing a search acquisition strategy, but your corporate strategy will benefit from casting a lower-profile "wide net" of keywords that customers are actually searching for.

When shooting dice in Vegas (craps is my preferred game for a number of reasons) it's tempting to bet the farm on snake-eyes. But the smart player knows the odds at the table and makes the same bets every time: pass-line and pass-line odds. The payout isn't as sexy as the 30-to-1 paid on those aces, but the odds are hugely long at 1 in 36. The "smart play" just described pays between 1:2 and 5:6 but the house edge reduces to a minimum.

Why play for a lower payout? Because you give yourself more opportunities to win at a much, much lower risk. AND you get to play more often!

I just ate at the most incredible steakhouse in Indianapolis.  Fo Go de Chou offers thick cuts of fillet Mignon and even a salad buffet.  Buffet Restaurants in Indianapolis have nothing on this steak house.  It even beats going to sports bars or a good Greek restaurant like the one on the canal.

The Oceanaire Seafood Room
30 South Meridian St. #100
Indianapolis, IN 46204

If you're looking for the best seafood restaurant Indianapolis, then The Oceanaire Seafood Room is the place for you! This fine dining restaurant is located a block south of Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, and sets the standard for seafood restaurants from coast-to-coast.

http://www.theoceanaire.com/Being seafood lovers, my boyfriend, Justin, and I chose this restaurant for a date night on Thursday night.  From the moment we walked in the door, the service was wondering.  We were led up to our table on the second floor by a staircase that looked much like the one in Titanic leading us upstairs.  The atmosphere had a "seafood chic" feel.  People were there for all different occasions.  Mind you, this was the same night as the Indianapolis Colts preseason game.  So some people were there in their Colts jerseys, while others came from work in business suits.

Our waiter was great - friendly, professional, and a seafood connoisseur.  He suggested the Halibut Cheeks and King Salmon.  Justin went with the Salmon, I got the Halibut, and we shared a side order of mashed potatoes.  Everything was delicious!  The fish was very fresh and didn't have a "fishy" taste at all, and the mashed potatoes were great as well.

The portion sizes were very generous - I ate leftovers for three days after we went!  Side orders are served "family style," so just make sure that everyone in your party can agree on something!  Definitely take a look at their extensive wine menu as well!

The Oceanaire is also known for its oyster bar, coining the phrase:

"To eat an oyster is to kiss the sea on the lips"

- Leonard Beck

So if you're lookig for an AMAZING dinner in downtown Indianapolis, definitely try The Oceanaire!

I give it two thumbs up... and would go as far as calling it: "The Oceanaire Extraordinarie!"

MacNiven's
339 Massachusetts Ave
Indianapolis, IN 46204
317.632.7268

For the Friday lunch, Meghan landed on MacNiven's Restaurant and Bar as the selection.  MacNiven's has the feel of a Scottish pub, with the menu and atmosphere to match.   It had a similar feel to other Indianapolis pubs, with quality food and fun service.

We all agreed that the atmosphere and wait staff gives MacNiven's a very "fun" feel, especially on a beautiful afternoon when they open up the windows.  We were able to sit at a table facing Mass Ave while enjoying the fine Scottish cuisine.

Chandra and Meghan both ordered the Angus burger, which is a cheeseburger prepared in a very unusual way.  They flatten out the patty until it is very thin and the size of the plate! Both of the ladies thought the burgers were top-notch.

Megan's grilled cheese was, quite possible, the "best grilled cheese ever," and Mikey claimed that his fish & chips was golden delicious. I went for the chicken curry with fried rice and was very pleased with the great flavor!

Although the menu was varied in its selections, it still seemed fairly limited.  If you're not willing to get outside of the "norm" with food selections, this might not be your perfect fit.  However, for a quick lunch break on a nice day, or an after work drink with friends (it is known to have an ample beer selection) MacNiven's should be the perfect downtown Indianapolis restaurant for you!

Bourbon Street Distillery
361 Indiana Ave
Indianapolis, IN 46204
(317) 636-3316

The Bourbon Street Distillery put up quite a fight today to be considered one of the best Indianapolis restaurants.

With quick service, a fun atmosphere, and a wide selection on the menu, this Indianapolis restaurant left myself and all of the members of the Compendium marketing team very satisfied.

The menu had a wide range of selections, with everything from spicy Cajun seafood dishes to club sandwiches eight inches tall and then finish it all off with cheesecake for dessert.

Overall, we agreed the atmosphere and service were both very favorable qualities.  The wait staff was fun and there was plenty of seating, both indoor and outside.  The restaurant is prime for a quick lunch break or an after work drink.

All five of us were in shock as our food came out not even ten minutes after we put our orders in!  I, personally, have never seen service so fast. And, in the words of Megan, the quick service makes it perfect for a speedy business lunch.

Mikey and Megan went the seafood route and were both very satisfied with their spicy dishes, Mikey had the craw fish etoufee and Megan tried the tilapia salad.

Meghan, Chandra, and I went the route of American cuisine... with Chandra ordering a HUGE club sandwich, Meghan having the Bourbon Burger (we're talking massive here folks) and I went with the old fashioned country fried steak with gravy.  We were all very happy with our selections.

Megan pointed out one of the only flaws we could find in this fine Indianapolis restaurant: The lack of a website or menu online.  I don't believe this was a breaking point for any of us, but with so many "blog-minded" individuals, we could easily see how the world of blogging could really help this restaurant.

This being my first Indianapolis restaurant review, I'm feeling pretty generous in giving this restaurant such a high score, but I must say... I'd give Bourbon Street Distillery a 9/10.

And Bourbon Street (yes I'm talking to you)... if you want that last point to get a perfect score, contact Compendium today and we'll help you get better connected to the Indianapolis community.

Thai Cafe In Broadripple!

Looking for a great Indianapolis Asian restaurant?  I highly suggest Thai Cafe!  Located in Broad Ripple at 1041 Broad Ripple Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46220 .  It is well known among Thai lovers and whether you are looking for authentic Thai dishes or a bit of comfort food in the form of yummy Pad Thai noodles, you will love this place!  The Vegetarian spring rolls also are high on my list.

Its A 10!

Concerned about the spicy factor that some Asian and particularly Thai food can have?  Thai cafe has a great system of "rating" your spiciness 1 to 10, 10 being the hottest.  You can easily customize how hot and spicy you want your dish.  They are fast and friendly whether you are dining in or enjoying takeout.  Whether you are just looking for great Indianapolis ethnic food, a unique Indy date restaurant, or wanting to expand your Indianapolis Asian dining experience from more than sushi and Chinese takeout, I'm sure you'll love Thai cafe!

Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:30AM - 9:30PM.

McCormick&Schmick's Seafood Restaurant at the Corner of Illinois&Market Streets at the base of the Downtown Hilton
(317) 631-9500

As an interested party to this Indianapolis Dining Guide, I'm always on the lookout for something different.  Typically during the day downtown I eat lunch as someplace fast.   The other day however, I found myself wanting to go someplace nice with my partner Ali and our big time Lawyer (patent work).   McCormick & Schmick's was perfect.   The place has just the right mix of being busy with downtown workers (all wearing ties) yet still easy enough to get in and out of.  We took a booth in the bar which is really nice looking with big booths and a great wooden bar.   They have two TV's up high and turned down low on ESPN so you could catch some highlights out of the corner of your eye...but not be intruded on.

Indianapolis menu guide:  they update the menu twice a day so you always know whats fresh & available.

Although McCormick & Schmick's is a great lunch spot, it's has really good seafood, terrific for dates,  but perhaps most popular among the crowd here at Compendium Blogware it's the best happy hour downtown. I wouldn't call it a place for Indianapolis nightlife,   but what is so appealing is the great bar and the terrific drinks.  Happy hour is fun and crowded partly because of the great menu.   Everything from fish tacos (for the mexican food lover) to one of the best Hamburgers in Indianapolis all for like....$1.95 each.   Great prices for great food.   All in all, a place I would highly recommend.  See the Video for a sense of the Lunchtime ambiance...

While I was talking with colleague, Jenni Edwards, she started telling me about a place she had eaten at recently, and I felt I needed to share it with you. To check out Jenni Edwards' business blog Click Here.

Up on 82nd street there is a steak and sushi place called Sapporo.  It is a hibachi grill, where the cooks make your food right in front of you, which is always entertaining. Jenni told me the food was very good…the Miso soup is good because of the small portions that don’t overwhelm your meal. Their sushi is delicious as well, but what is phenomenal there is the Tempura Ice Cream! It’s a deep fried ice cream that is both hot and cold. If you do go there, I would highly recommend saving room for that dessert! As for the price, it is a little more than she expected. The atmosphere is great for almost any occasion, whether you are going with your family or just out to get a bit to eat and might even be a great place for a date. It was highly recommended overall and I am sure that anyone that goes would feel the same way. So if you’re in the mood for some Japanese cuisine here in Indianapolis…check out Sapporo!

I would not call myself a sushi connoisseur by any means, but I have been to enough sushi restaurants in the country to have an opinion on which are the best.  I would have to say that out of all the sushi restaurants in this great country, my favorite would have to be one that I found in the Indianapolis Dining Guide.  It is an upscale place called Sushi on the Rocks.  It is a spin off of another restaurant by the name of Yummy Chopsticks.  Sushi on the Rocks is by far the best downtown Indianapolis restaurant there is.
One of the delicious rolls
It has a unique blend of modern decor with a touch of traditional Japan.  There are many menu items to choose from.  You can order anything from chicken teriyaki to seaweed salad.   They have the most exciting selection of rolls as well.  I suggest trying either the spicy tuna roll or the volcano roll.  They have over 40 to choose from, so there is one for everybody.  Everything is prepared extremely well and fresh.  Of course, lunch is lovely too, and that's when I was here. The menu is extensive, offering a la carte sushi, Korean and Japanese dishes, and sandwiches and salads with an Asian bento box.

Next time you are in the mood for sushi, try this place and enjoy!  You can find this lovely place at 235 South Meridian Street Indianapolis, IN 46225.

Throughout some of my posts I will identify a new Sushi restuarant for each week.

For those of you who have never tried sushi, I will try here to tempt your palate into craving some great sushi.  For those of you who have, I will try and give you a broad range of various sushi restaurants  in the Indianapolis area serving up some great sushi.

Sushi in Japanese Cuisine is a food made of rice and is usually combined with other ingredients such as Fish. There are various types of sushi: makizushi, nigirizushi, inarizushi, chirashi-zushi.

The first restaurant in the Indy area that I tried was SAKURA. After being seating shortly after I was there at the sushi bar, I took in the decor. It was a bit outdated and the paper dividers of the rooms were starting to fall apart and fairly flimsy. But over all a good atmosphere. There were alot of people there at the 7:00pm dining hours.

I ordered from the bar and had California rolls, spicy tuna rolls,  and some warm sake.  I watched as the chef behind the counter hand rolled my suhi and it was great. The sushi was magnificently rolled to perfection.  And the service was wonderful.

The prices were average and well worth it for the great tasting food. I definatly recommend this sushi restaurant to other.

The Japanese Sakura Restuarant is located at 7201 N. Keystone Avenue. 317.259.4171

I love good jazz music... almost as much as I love to eat!  The Jazz Kitchen serves up the best of both worlds.  Not only does the Jazz Kitchen have some of the best food around but guests are able to listen to some of the best local, regional, and national jazz musicians live, my favorite is the Frank Glover Quartet.  I highly recommend the Paella, which is a delicate blend of shrimp, scallops, calamari, fish, mussels, pork & chicken in a savory saffron rice.  It serves two and is one of my favorite seafood dishes of all time.  It is a great place to bring a date.  The Jazz Kitchen is located off of N College Ave in Indy, very close to Butler University.

One of my favorite places in Indy is a sushi resaurant in Broadripple called Naked Tchopstix.  I had never had sushi before when my best friend, Pat, suggested we try it.  When we got there I was a little intimidated by the menu and asked our server what she recommended.  She said that the Playboy Roll was, by far, everyone's favorite item.  Pat and I took her word for it and each ordered a Playboy Roll with a side of fried rice... I have never been so happy taking someone's advice, the Playboy Roll is definitely what to order when dining at Naked Tchopstix!  It has a little spice to it but it really isn't that spicy.  If you are looking for a mild roll, my girlfriend really likes the Maui Roll which has a slice of mango in each piece... she loves it.  If you are ever in Broadripple and are feeling a little on the adventuous side you absolutely must try the Playboy Roll at Naked Tchopstix!

Last weekend, my girlfriend, Siobhan, and I went to Clay Terrace in Carmel for dinner.  We ended up at Kona Grill and after a short wait, while checking out the menu, we were seated at a comfortable booth.  Both of us were impressed by the atmosphere but we felt it was slightly too dark, Siobhan may have called ahead to have them turn the lights down so she didn't have to look at me!  We started off with a sushi dish called the Spyder Roll and absolutely loved it and look forward to going back to try some other delicious sounding rolls.  Siobhan ordered the Macademia Nut Crusted Chicken and I ordered the Island Meatloaf.  I know what you're thinking, who orders meatloaf at a fancy restuarant?  Well, the answer is I do and I am very happy I did!  Siobhan and I loved our dishes but the portions were a little big, but that just means left-overs!  We even saved room for dessert and ordered the Macademia Nut Pie which was very tasty.  The service was second to none, our server was very personable and the manager stopped by our table twice to check up on us.  The menu price was a little high but felt the food was more than worth it.  Siobhan and I have a new favorite restaurant in Indy.
