If you're looking for a downtown Indianapolis restaurant - check out this restaurant. This great little restaurant is tucked at the north end of the canal. After spending some time walking the length of the canal, my boyfriend and I stopped at the Creation Cafe for dinner. The location of this restaurant is perfect. Essentially, people reach a dead end at this part of the canal. So what's next?! Eat!

For starters, the sign was appealing so we decided to give it a shot. We walked into the restaurant and the atmosphere was great. It had the feel of a small coffee shop, yet it served delicious food! The outside balcony overlooked the canal. There was a 30 minute wait to sit outside, so we were asked to sit and wait near the actually "cafe" part of the restaurant (where they really did serve coffee). There were comfy couches and chairs with numerous books to read while we waited. Needless to say, the wait went quickly and their service was caring and prompt.

The food was absolutely delicious. The waiter recommended the Cuban sandwich - so I ordered it. The portions were generous and I took enough home for another meal. The french fries were also great - some of the best fries I've ever eaten!

Overall, the portions were generous, the food was fresh, and the menu had many options. Creation Cafe's menu was general, but all of the food had a special twist to it. It's a restaurant in Indianapolis that still hasn't been discovered yet.

Chicken and Waffles?

So there is this place located in the heart of downtown that serves what I would like to call home cookin'. Maxine's Chicken and Waffles is a great place if you want have a little time to kill during your lunch hour. So when it was Mikey's turn to choose where we went, he made the executive decision to check out Maxine's, which turned out to be a great restaurant in Indianapolis.

I personally never thought that chicken and waffles would ever be appetizing together, but turns out... it's not that bad. I ordered the Dusty's Waffle and since I wanted the full experience, I ordered a Jumbo Chicken Wing. I wasn't disappointed in the waffle, which had this sweet spread and even better syrup to put on top. It also came with two eggs and two pieces of sausage. When I ordered the Jumbo Chicken wing, I was a little worried because I didn't know if I was going to be able to eat it all. However, upon it's arrival I realized I wasn't intimidated and Jumbo doesn't really mean anything related to it's size (I'm still trying to figure that one out...)

Megan ordered the Veggie Omlet with an extra side. However, she was kind of dissapointed because they came back with the wrong kind of bread. She

was brutally honest with me when I asked her what she thought of our choice. She said that the service wasn't up to par because it slow and she thought other people got there after us and they were served before us.

Meghan also had the Dusty's Waffle with the sides of eggs and turkey sausage. She thought her food was very good, yet filling so make sure you go on an EMPTY stomach. She also said the staff was very friendly but to make sure you get there a little early because the tables fill up quick!

When I asked Mikey what he thought of his choice his response....... "Dude...peach butter... wow." He also said that he felt a "taste of love in each bite, no exaggeration." So I am going to take a stab in the dark and say that he liked his choice a lot.

So all-in-all it was a pretty good choice. We got out of the office for a while and visit a different side of town that we weren't exposed to regularly. It was a good time! If you only have credit, lukily for you they accept those too. So if you are ever around town, check out Maxine's Chicken and Waffles, located at 132 North East Street in Indianapolis. Maxine will probably even seat you!

No room in the Elbow Room

A few weeks ago before I left for my spring break, we decided to grab lunch at this little place just north of the circle on Pennsylvania. Elbow room is a great Indianapolis restaurant that everyone needs to stop by at some point.

When the marketing team here at Compendium went, we all happen to order something different, which was good to give us some insight on their expansive menu.

Mikey ordered a veggie burger. When I asked him what he thought about it he did the "Raise the Roof" motion. He said that it was good and his burger had a lot of flavor. Also he really liked the bar and thought it might be a good place to check out. Maybe for a game? or just to have a couple drinks with friends?

Meghan ordered the strawberry chicken salad and was very impressed with the fact that they had Fat Free dressings for a healthier alternative. She said that her food was very flavorful, even with it being a more health conscious meal.

Megan had the Turkey Bourbon sandwich and found it to be very good. She mentioned that it was a bit crowded, but if you are going to grab lunch with co-workers, you have to commit and make sure that you have enough time.

Chandra at the cob salad with chicken and found it to be tasty as well. She said the staff were very friendly and very efficient. However, she said that the place was small, "hense the name 'Elbow Room'" Also she mentioned something about her dressing being soupy... so watch out and be prepared!

As for me, I ordered the American Burger. It was a harty meal consisting of a burger, with American cheese, red onions, lettuce, and bacon. And to go

along with it, I ordered the fries... oh how i love fries.

I think we all would agree that it was a great downtown Indianapolis restaurant. However, the rush comes around noon, so if you are going there for lunch, just get there a little early.

So if you are looking for a good downtown Indianapolis restaurant, you should think about going to Elbow room, located at 605 N. Pennsylvania. You can check out their website and their menu online!

Amazing Valentine's Meal at Peterson's

This past weekend on Valentine's Day, I had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful dinner at an amazing locally owned restaurant on the north side of Indianapolis, Peterson's.

Locally owned and operated, Peterson's restaurant is a dream come true for successful business owner Joe Peterson and his family. Joe's desire is to provide an unmatchable ambiance serving only the best to patrons.

While on the pricey side, it was an amazing dinner and worth every penny. As an appetizer, we had stuffed shrimp, had a lobster bisque soup and then for our meals, we enjoyed a New York Strip and Lamb. Everything was to die for. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive, which only added to the experience!

Without a doubt, I would recommend Peterson's both for special evening or just a great dinner!

New Scotty's Downtown!!

Last night I decided to meet up with someone for some drinks after work. We decided to go to the Scotty's Brewhouse downtown because we had never been to it. She had been to the one located on the northside, but not their new location.

When we got there, the hostess was very helpful in giving the soups of the day (but we weren't really there for the soup). The waitor was great, he was very helpful and cordial when we asked him to come back in a few minutes to give us time to decide on what we wanted. He definatly knew his beers. I wanted to try something new and asked him for a lighter beer (but not a light, light beer). He gave me a great suggestion and it was exactly what I was looking for.

We also got some appetizers to go along with our drinks. The ones we finally decided on were the Dill Chips and the Kitchen Sink Sampler. If you have never been to Scotty's you have to try the Dill Chips when you go. It doesn't matter if you have never had them, or whatever your excuse.. just get them.. you can't go wrong. The Kitchen Sink Sampler consisted of 2 chicken feathers (which are just chicken fingers), 1/2 order of loaded fries, 1/2 order of beer battered onion rings, and 8 mini corndogs... mmmm so good!

Everything was awesome and the service was fantastic. Our waiter, Beau, was first rate...

The atmosphere was awesome. If you are looking for a place to grab a few drinks after work, or if you are hoping a night to watch the game and eat some appetizers... Scotty's is the place. The are several locations: Downtown Indy, on the Northside, Muncie, Bloomington, and West Lafayette.

Great Pizza on the North Side

So the other day I was talking with Compendium's creative designer Mikey about places to grab a bite to eat in indy. He has mentioned a place that I hadn't had since I was a kid. Arnie's pizza, located up on 96th street is a great place to grab some pizza at a reasonable price.

After Mikey had mentioned Arnie's, I had to ask what he thought about it. He first said that the variety is a lot wider than he expected. Arnie's has an extensive menu including not only Pizza, but subs and salads as well (there is something there for everyone). Mikey also said that he liked that the pizza was thin crust (my favorite!!) Also, the ingredients are chopped up in smaller pieces (which allows for more toppings!) On top of the great pizza and the wide variety of food, Mikey said that there is a big bar. So it is a great place to grab a bite to eat and a few drinks before a night out.

There are several locations where you can get your fix of Arnie's pizza. The on in Indy is on 96th street (it recently moved up there from it's previous location on 86th street in the strip mall next to Wal-Mart). You can call in or order on-line and get carry out for those nights that you want to pick up something on your way home from work!

A Chocolate Place That Has More than Just Chocolate

Ok, so I delayed blogging about last Friday's lunch. I have good reason... I got distracted. Anyway, last week the Marketing Team here at Compendium chose a place to eat downtown Indianapolis called South Bend Chocolate Cafe. Along with the usual marketing team we took newcomer, Chandra.

So for our lunch dinning experience, I believe that all of us agreed that it was a great place to go. Megan first spoke up and said that her food was excellent. She had ordered the Chicken Fajita Panini with pepperjack cheese with a Tomato Bisque soup and pretzles (or chips) and pickle that came with her meal (which no one saw coming). Megan also mentioned that it was a good place to grab a sandwich and soup. Meghan and I both ordered the Ham and Cheese Panini along with Chedder and Broccoli soup. Meghan felt that it was good food and while you are there, you can see the many desserts they have to offer. She said that "you'll be eating your lunch and craving your dessert". I would recommend it for a great restaurant in Indianapolis, if you just want a place to sit down from walking around the circle on cold winter day or a during the summer. Chantelle ordered the Grilled Cheese with Ruffles Crinkle Potato chips (which I guess is the kind of chips they use... I didn't really notice). She ordered off of the kids menu and said that the kid's meal has a lot of food for the value. Chantelle also mentioned that the next time she goes, she wants to try the "Fondue for Four". (We aren't completely sure what it is, but it sounds like a lot of fun!). Mikey ordered the "Hot Ham and Cheese with Tomatoes, Blue Cheese and it was really good!" He also ordered the Chicken and Dumpling soup. Mikey mentioned that it is a harty meal for a cold day (and it really was a cold day). Our newcomer, Chandra (who is our new Business Manager) ordered the Ham and Cheese with garden vegetable soup. She said it was very hot and "Yumo" (and I think that means it was good, or tasty, or any exclamation you might use for a appetizing food meal).

After our meal, we decided that the Southbend Chocolate Cafe was overall very good, and the service was very friendly. Also, if you want extras on the sandwiches on the menu, you can ask for extras and they won't charge you for them. The atmosphere was amazing. You could smell the chocolate and candies in the air. Meghan also pointed out that you could purchase bags of carmel corn, chocolate covered pretzles, etc, to buy and eat for a good afternoon snack. Also, if you want to visit during the summer, there is outside seating so that you may enjoy the day as well as your delicious sandwich. However, after you leave you may find that you smell like the restaurant for the rest of the day. So if you get a free lunch break in downtown Indianapolis, check out the Southbend Chocolate Factory Cafe, located right on the circle, at 20 North Meridian(There is also a satillite location in the new Indianapolis International Airport.)

A Hidden Gem on North Meridian

There were only three of us that were able to go out to lunch this time. So Monica was the big decision maker of the day and took us to a place that was literally hidden unless you had heard about it. Gabriel's, located just north of the Baker&Daniel's building on meridian, was the location of our weekly lunch venture. The menu there is very extensive and I think Monica put it best when she said that there is "so much variety, its hard to decide what you want". I found myself changing my mind several times up until the time that I was forced to order because there was a line forming behind me. We all ordered the "Pick 2" meal which comes with a 1/2 of a sandwich and a soup or salad. I got the Turkey Melt with a bowl of Chili (I guess that counts as a soup). Both were very tasty and very filling. I actually had homemade chili the night before, with my roommates and Gabriel's chili was comparable. Monica ordered the Turkey Melt with a Spinach salad. She said that it was "good food at a good value" and both were delicious. Meghan ordered the Chili and the half of the Grilled Ham & Cheese sandwich. She said it was very good; the Chili was delicious and tasted homemade and gave her that "homemade feel". The portion sizes were perfect; not too much food, but filled you up and the next time she goes back she will get the homemade Mac and Cheese. She also mentioned that the bread was "perfectly toasted". She means that the bread made the sandwich better because it wasn't mushy, nor was it like a piece of burn carbon bread.

As for the atmosphere, it was almost like a cafeteria type setting. You first grab your tray and silverware. Then you place your order and go pay your bill. You go and sit down and your food is brought out to you. So I guess it is kind of like an upscale cafeteria. Meghan thought the atmosphere was really cool, with the different lights around and different colored paints on the wall. The people there are very nice and very quick with your food order. One last thing, they take both cash and credit when you go, so you don't have to worry about stopping at an ATM prior to going there. So if you are interested in a place to eat that will give you that "home cooking" feeling for your lunchbreak, go ahead and check out Gabriel's Cafeteria & Sandwich Shoppe located at 320 North Meridian, right in the heart of downtown.

So how do I evaluate a downtown Indianapolis restaurant? Especially for Lunch? Ambiance, convenience and food. To me, to get a designation as one of the best lunch restaurants in Indianapolis you have to start with how it feels. Most of the time you want a place you can have a conversation, a restaurant that’s attractive and friendly….a place that’s cool so you glow in how cool it is to your guest.

Buggs Temple at the north end of the Downtown Indy Canal meets that criteria. I never even heard of Buggs Temple before 11am this morning, but Kyle Saylers of Clarian Health Ventures treated me today and it was fantastic. It’s a great old church located right on the tip of the Canal. It was a little bit of a hike from my office on the downtown Indianapolis Circle and I saw there was plenty of parking. Inside were huge windows looking over the canal…it was a little chilly for the outside deck, but it looked beautiful. The waiters were fantastic, fun, knew the menu and were wearing June Cleaver aprons, Our guy knew the menu, was friendly and attentive while giving us plenty of space to have our conversation.

I've not been to this Indianapolis downtown restaurant at night, but imagine it's a great place for a date. Supposedly there is an upstairs that has terrific views and is one of the top spots for Indianapolis fine dining. The menu did include Steak and Seafood along with great grilled sandwiches. I had a Cuban, which came with a fresh mixed salad. I'm not sure about breakfast, and their website is one of the worst I've ever seen.

Today I had a great lunch up in Carmel Indiana with Patty Bender of Compendium Blogware client Sheetz Century 21.

I've never been to a Macaroni Grill before and usually try and avoid the big box eateries on Indy's north side. If I'm looking for the best Italian food in Indianapolis, I'm not sure this would be my first choice.

Until now that is.   Every time I have this experience, I have to just say: "Chris Baggott: Get over yourself"   Romano's Macaroni Grill is awesome. I can't say for dinner, but for a lunch restaurant it was fantastic. The environment is high end Italian cusine. I love an Italian Restaurant that has bread and olive oil on the table....just sets the quality meter up right from the start.

I had the Grilled Halibut Seasoned halibut topped with a tomato basil relish and served with pesto Parmesan risotto for $16.99. Clever marketers that they are, each item on the menu was accompanied by the Chef's Recommended Wine. In this case a Chardonnay by Mezzacorona (Italy).

I'm guessing that this place packs them in at night, but the bar is huge and looks like a lot of fun.   Patty and I kept it to business and didn't indulge in any wine or cocktails, but for a lunch meeting is was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in Indianapolis.

One last great thing about Romano’s Macaroni Grill is their Curbside to Go program. Call or order Indianapolis Best Italian food online and pick it up at the curb.   They have great to-go family style food too!

Lunch at the Hot Dog Place

This week Meghan (with an “H”) was in charge of making the decision for the weekly Compendium Blogware Marketing team lunch. If you want to check out Compendium and what we do you can Click Here.

This week Meghan chose a place that is just around the corner from our office called King David Dogs. It is a small place on Pennsylvania Street in the heart of Indianapolis. When you walk in you will see the menu posted right there on the wall. They have a full menu with foods ranging from a corn dog to a New York Dog with sauerkraut, mustard, and a New York style Onion Relish. They serve quarter pound hot dogs on a poppy seed bun (or if you want a pretzel bun) topped with almost

anything you want. After leaving the restaurant Megan said she was “thoroughly stuff and did not anticipate being that way.” So when you go make sure you are hungry because the meals are larger than you might expect. She and Meghan ordered the Chicago Dog which had mustard, tomato, a sliced pickle, sweet relish, and onions. Both of them thought it was delicious. To add on, Megan said that it was a “fork and knife” meal and you’re definitely going to need napkins when you get your food, so stock up when you get your drink because it is kind of messy. Meghan also said that it was good for a cold day because all the food is “warm food”. Mikey ordered the New York Dog along with a cup of chili. He also requested some chili on his dog, but the hot dog guru behind the counter advised against it because it would be like a double chili bomb and he might regret it in his future. Mikey said he was glad that he took the guru’s advice. I decided to be adventurous and try the Pretzel dog. It was the same hot dog, but on a pretzel bun. I didn’t know what to put on top of it, so again I took the guru’s advice and put some chili and cheese on top and I did not regret it. However, it is very filling because the pretzel bun is a little larger than the normal bun and I had to take some of it home. As for the price, I think Meghan put it best when she said that it was very reasonably priced for all the food you get (your dog and fries or tater tots). It made the price even better when you order a drink, you get a nice souvenir cup with the King David Dogs logo on it to take back to work for a water cup. Also if you are a ice eater, the ice is light and fluffy, kind of like snow but when it is packed together a little (that is as well as I can describe it so just go get the ice).

The atmosphere was awesome because it gives you that hole-in-the-wall feeling when you walk in. It might not be good for a business meeting because the food might end up on your suit. However, it would be good if you are wanted to step out of your comfort zone and try someplace different. It would also be good for a date, but be sure to bring your gum because those onions will mess with your breath. It would be a great place to grab some lunch in downtown Indianapolis. So if you are looking for a place you can get a hot dog with pretty much whatever you want on it check out King David Dogs located at 15 North Pennsylvania.

Hungry for some Authentic Italian?

The other day, my coworker Jennifer Buscher was telling me about a restaurant just north of Broad Ripple on Westfield Boulevard and 86th street. To read up on Jennifer’s business blog Click Here

It is called Amalfi Ristorante Italiano. It is authentic Italian food made by an couple

who moved to the United States from Italy. She said it was a high end restaurant with a romantic atmosphere. She also mentioned that would be good for a romantic night out for an anniversary or Valentine’s Day. Not some much of a place for a first date or a business meeting. The pasta dishes are phenomenal, but she highly recommended their lasagna, which is apparently the restaurants most popular dish. Also, she said there is a vast wine selection, which would probably be a good topper for that romantic evening you were looking for. As for price, she said it was “Not very expensive; but expensive.” From what I can guess, I think it means that it was cheaper than she was expecting. As for a rating from Jennifer, 5 out of 5. So go check it out.

Eddy's Neighborhood Bar and Eatery, for all occasions

While most of the restaurants I will include in my Indianapolis dining guide actually are located in downtown Indianapolis, sometimes a restaurant just grabs my attention enough that I feel the need to include it in my guide, even if it is located all the way out on Geist Reservoir. Most people have heard of Geist if they are from Indianapolis, as it is a mere half-hour drive east on I-70 and north on Olio Road, but most probably haven't heard of a pretty good restaurant located on its shores, known as Eddy's Bar and Eatery. I first heard about Eddy's through one of my friends that I went to high school with, and after the couple of times I have gone there for dinner, I sure am glad she told me about it. Eddy's Neighborhood Bar and

Grill is an indoor-outdoor sports bar, and delicious eatery that serves everything from great steaks to Italian cuisine, to local seafood, all at a very reasonable price for its prime location with a view of Geist Reservoir. In my opinion, Eddy's is an anytime restaurant, in that one could have lunch or dinner there with colleagues, friends, relatives, business partners, families, or just about anyone else, because it has an atmosphere of what I would consider a seafood restaurant with an upscale twist. The combination, however, makes for a delicious lunch and dinner restaurant, with a great view, and anyone who goes there is bound to have a great and memorable experience. So, take the drive out to Eddy's Neighborhood Bar and Eatery--it is certainly worth it!

Maggiano's Little Italy

"...when the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie, that's amore..." Everytime I walk into this restaurant, that song plays in my head at least once. This restaurant gives you the feel of a traditional Italian-American establishment, as if you were in little Italy. Ive been here on many occasions (family visits, couples night, friends, etc.) and the food is just as delicious as when I ate there that time before.

I can't really put my finger on a specific plate that I like the most because Ive enjoyed all of the meals that Ive had here. Maggiano's features signature plates in the menu that are cooked house-style. I would recommend eating here, at least once, and experience for yourself the taste of little Italy!

I gave this restaurant a perfect score because of the menu. It does contain such dishes as Fettucine Alfredo and Spaghetti with Meatballs, two non-authentic Italian dishes. We must realize, however, that Maggiano's represents a "Little Italy" style of dining, not a purely home-land Italian style. It is this that allows Maggiano's to represent Italian-American dining.

Two summers ago I lived on the north-side of Indianapolis and I would always pass this restaurant on my way to work. It looked like a pricey, extravagant, and overachieving anniversary type restaurant. It wasn't until this past summer that I realized the true nature of the Bonefish Grill.

My girlfriend and I decided to make the most of the summer off and enjoy a relaxing night at Bonefish Grill. To be honest, I was dreading the dinner because I had premonitions that I was going to spend an 'arm and a leg' for the meal. Once inside, I didn't feel any better. The interior was elegant and trendy with table displays of an expensive steak restaurant. We sat down and I reluctantly opened the menu, fearing the numbers on the page. My jaw almost hit the floor! The prices were well within my range and the dishes were promising. I was so happy with the prices that I splurged and ordered an appetizer. The one appetizer in particular that caught my eye was the Crab Cakes. These large, delicious cakes hit the pallet just right! I would highly recommend eating these “gifts from the sea” if you have the opportunity. For the main course, I decided to try the Atlantic Salmon because I haven’t had this dish in a very long time. I was very impressed with the dish. It was what I remember Atlantic Salmon tasting like. My compliments to the chef!

If I were in your shoes and have never tried this restaurant, I would immediately call my closest Bonefish Grill and reserve a table. Not only do they offer spectacular ‘surf’ but also a wide variety of ‘turf’ dishes. You can check out the menu here!

So maybe you are on a lunch date, are on the north side and are looking for what might be the best pizza in Indianapolis. Bella Pizzeria might be just the place. I visited the location in Clay Terrace (which always freaks me out). As an area that tries to mimic what a town might look like Bella Pizzeria actually does a nice job of preparing excellent pizza by the slice and other traditional New York dishes.

MCcormick and Schmick's

Last week I tried out McCormick and Schmick's Happy Hour. It was simply amazing! Great food for such a low price! I looked over the items from the Famous $1.95 Bar Food Menu. I tried the fried Calamari with cocktail sauce and the spinach and artichoke dip. They were both amazing. The cocktails were also great. My cosmopolitan was mixed to perfection and the bar tender was great. The service was great, the food was tasty, and the bill was amazing!!
